چکیده

Heightened reliance on the cerebral cortex for postural stability with aging is well-known, yet cortical mechanisms balance control, particularly in relation to function, remain unclear. Here we aimed investigate motor activity level of challenge presented during reactive recovery and identify circuit-specific interactions between prefrontal or somatosensory regions metrics function that predict fall risk. Using electroencephalography, assessed beta power, coherence reactions perturbations older adults. We found individuals greater power evoked following standing demonstrated lower general clinical function. Individual adults a wide range responses at same perturbation magnitude, showing no group-level change prefrontal- somatosensory-motor response perturbations. However, highest prefrontal-motor post-perturbation, but not pre-perturbation, period showed cognitive dual-task interference (DTI) elicited stepping magnitudes. Our results support as potential biomarker individual implicate networks distinct aspects control involving inhibition Cortical network may provide neural target precision-medicine efforts prevention aging.

Gaze behavior of older adults during rapid balance-recovery reactions.

BACKGROUND Rapid stepping reactions are a prevalent response to sudden loss of balance and play a crucial role in preventing falls. A previous study indicated that young adults are able to guide these stepping reactions amid challenging environmental constraints using "stored" visuospatial information. This study addressed whether healthy older adults also use "stored" visuospatial information ...

The Effect of Cognitive Training on Lower Limb Muscular Activity in Older Adults With Balance Impairment During Walking

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to compare the effects of two different approaches of dual-task training and executive training on lower limb muscular activity in older adults with balance impairment. Methods: This was a quasi-experimental study performed with the pre-test and post-test method. Thirty older adults (age= 73.8±4.6, height= 1.65±0.06, weight= 69.17±12.67) were randomly ass...

Changes in cortical activity associated with adaptive behavior during repeated balance perturbation of unpredictable timing

The compensation for a sudden balance perturbation, unpracticed and unpredictable in timing and magnitude is accompanied by pronounced postural instability that is suggested to be causal to falls. However, subsequent presentations of an identical perturbation are characterized by a marked decrease of the amplitude of postural reactions; a phenomenon called adaptation or habituation. This study ...

Comparing Age-Ralated Changes of Balance Performance In Youth and Older Adults

Objectives: The purpose of current study was to compare the effect of aging on balance in different sensory conditions. Methods & Materials: In this cross sectional study we compared 20 healthy youth (with age 22.75±2.29) and 20 healthy older adults (with age 65.1±4.16) in single leg standing in different sensory conditions. Sensory conditions were open eye/ hard surface (OEHS), closed eye/ ...

Gait and balance disorders in older adults.

Gait and balance disorders are common in older adults and are a major cause of falls in this population. They are associated with increased morbidity and mortality, as well as reduced level of function. Common causes include arthritis and orthostatic hypotension; however, most gait and balance disorders involve multiple contributing factors. Most changes in gait are related to underlying medica...
